Basic Fire Safety

Site specific basic fire safety training is now a requirement for all staff under the new Fire Safety Order 2005.

It requires that on induction to an organisation or company all employees must receive training in ‘what to do in case of fire’. The training must also be reviewed on a regular basis and be given by a competent individual or organisation.

Course overview
It is designed to provide basic fire safety knowledge, in order that employees are aware of what to do in the event of a fire and how to help maintain a fire safe environment. The course may be tailored to suit varying industries and can range in duration from 1-2 hours.

A practical session on fire extinguishers is set within the course if required providing a suitable area is available, this takes approximately 30 - 40 minutes, depending on the number of delegates.

Aims
To improve personal awareness of the dangers of fire and the hazards associated with it.

To demonstrate the necessary skills in dealing with fire emergencies, including safe evacuation of a building in the event of an emergency.

To be able to operate safely and efficiently any fire extinguisher within the workplace.

Learning Objectives
On completion of the course the delegates should:

  1. Recognise the need for fire safety training.
  2. Be conversant with their roles and responsibilities.
  3. Have an understanding of the constituents of fire (i.e. the fire triangle).
  4. Recognise the fire hazards related to their individual place of work.
  5. Understand the term “means of escape”.
  6. Understand how to reduce the risk of arson.
  7. Know what actions to take on discovering a fire.
  8. Know what actions to take on hearing the fire alarm.
  9. Be able to select and operate fire fighting equipment efficiently and safely.
  10. Be able to identify hazards, risks and their prioritisation

Additional Information
This course must be completed by all employees, and is a prerequisite for anyone wishing to attend the fire warden course.

Certification
A certificate of attendance is issued upon completion.
